Address by the President

G.PHOTIOUOlympiad has reached to an end, the sailing season is still active in Cyprus and abroad and  we are pleased to observe that sailing is progressing continuously.

Pavlos  Kontides aimed the gold medal in Rio. Finally  he  took the 7th place in Laser. He felt disappointed, but the 7th place with 104 points is an important Olympic distinction for Cyprus, while it is another  proof  for him that he belongs in the elite of  sailing.  It is  furthermore a proof for Cyprus sailing, that  the sport  is in a visible position in the World sailing map.  Sailing  is the only sport that  gave Cyprus Olympic medal. We are confident that Pavlos Kontides will return in Tokyo in 2020.

Andreas Cariolou In his fourth Olympiad aimed to qualify in the medal race. Finally he got the 19th place in the RS: X with 181 points.  He stated that he is not satisfied with its overall presence. Regardless of the outcome, Andreas Cariolou remains a high-level athlete.

Cyprus sailing achieved two significant  international successes, during the last month. Orestis Germanos was placed fourth in the U17 category out of 47 participants. The success  story does not end here.  He managed to enter the gold fleet, placing himself 18th overall (U19 category), with 138 participants.

The success came in the Radial Youth Europeans Championships & Trophy 2016 staged in Tallinn Estonia, between the 9th and 14th of August 2016

Stavri Tοtou placed herself into the gold fleet in a European or World championship. She was ranked at 49th position , between  105 participants. The success came in the European optimist championship held in the city of Crotone, Italy from 15 to 22 July 2016.

These successes are the result of systematic work done on the basis of the sport, a sector where Cyprus Sailing Federation through specific programs gives great importance in recent years. Part of the program and the overall plan is the frequent presence of the athletes in high-level events , where through the intense competition, they have the opportunity  to increase their level.

Feeling proud of the  progress  of our favorite sport, we continue with determination and faith, with the expectation that  the future is even better.
